Donald Trump’s top coronavirus doctor has warned that the US will have more coronavirus diagnoses than Italy in the next four or five days.
White House coronavirus response coordinator Dr Deborah Birx told a press conference Tuesday that Americans should brace themselves for a huge surge in the number of people with Covid-19. She claimed the upcoming spike in diagnosis numbers were the result of a week’s worth of testing being conducted in just 24 to 48 hours.
Dr Birx said: ‘We will see the numbers dramatically increase over the next four or five days. I know some of you will use that to “raise the alarm” that the US is becoming Italy because (of) the slope of our curve.’
The US has so far confirmed 7,636 coronavirus diagnoses, with 117 people killed by Covid-19. Italy has 31,506 coronavirus cases, with 2,503 Covid-19 sufferers dying as a result.
Earlier on Tueday, Birx told the same group of reporters of ‘concerning reports’ about ‘disproportionate’ numbers of young people being struck down by Covid-19, the disease caused by coronavirus
Birx said: ‘There may be a disproportionate number of infections among that group.
Even if it’s a rare occurrence, it may be seen more frequently among that group (that previously thought).
‘We are concerned about the early reports of Italy and France.’
Birx then appeared to appeal to youngster who had gathered on beaches across the US to celebrate the annual Spring Break holiday, saying: ‘I am going to call on that generation that brought us innovation.
‘We cannot have these large gatherings continuing to occur for people who are off work.
‘You have the potential to spread the condition to someone who does not have the condition and potentially have a disastrous result.’
