The 7 weight loss clubs you can get an NHS discount on NOW including Slimming World

THE NHS is offering discounts to seven weight loss clubs to help kickstart your journey.

A range of options are on the table – from Slimming World to football league MAN V FAT – so you can choose something suited to your needs.

Each club or online platform is working in partnership with Public Health England’s Better Health campaign.

Some cost just £12 for three months of support, while others are a few pounds per week in order to get a more personalised approach.

Better Health, part of the Government’s Obesity Strategy, relaunched this summer after a nationwide survey of 5,000 adults in England revealed that over four in 10 have put on weight since the first lockdown in March 2020.

Almost over half a stone (4.1kg) was gained on average by those who put on weight.

In adults aged 35 to 65 years old, the average weight gain for those who put on weight rises to over 10lbs (4.6kg).

But nine in 10 said it was important for them to get back into health habits this summer.

If you're one of those people, what are you waiting for? Sign up to one of these clubs today:

Slimming World

Offer: Join for free and get six weeks for the price of five when you buy a six-week group membership before 6th September 2021, paying £29.75 on week one.

Find out more here.

The Slimming World diet, created in 1969, focuses on a diet of Food Optimising, where members are given a list of Syn Free food, that can be eaten in unlimited amounts.

It means you can fill up on foods like vegetables, potatoes, rice, fruit and pasta as much as you like.

You are encouraged to eat Healthy Extras in small amounts, like cheese.

And you can still eat treats, as the diet allows for 5 to 15 “Syns” each day – like chocolate, sweets, ice cream and biscuits.

The programme generally encourages dieters to swap high-fat foods for low-fat foods that are naturally filling.

You can get support from fellow slimmers at weekly group meetings and follow an exercise plan to become gradually more active through their Body Magic initiative.

It’s designed to help you loose about 1-2 pounds a week.

This couple lost more than 17st between them over a year and a half, and said they were eating more than ever – just in a healthier way.

WW – Weight Watchers

Offer: 30-day free trial

Find out more here.

WW – formerly Weight Watchers – has been around for decades and is  endorsed by scores of celebrities.

WW works on a Smart Points system, where foods are rated on their protein, carbs, fat and fibre content.

It's essentially calorie counting made easy, and there's absolutely no limit on the amount of fruit and vegetables you can eat.

Dieters even get a weekly Smart Points safety net, meaning you can treat yourself on a night out, as well as a personalised exercise plan.

It’s less extreme than other diet plans and dieters are able to lose up to 2lb a week.

A 2012 NHS study found that men and women who attended WW classes lost more than those who went to other slimming clubs.

Noom

Offer: 14-day free trial and exclusive price of £15 per month

Find out more here.

Noom is an app and personalised meal-planning service that offered personalised calorie targets, one-to-one coaching from a PT and a food and exercise diary.

The plan, targeted at millennials, is designed by behavioural psychologists which claims to help users lose weight and keep it off.

The company states that the ideology behind the coaching and content is designed to "'trick' your body into building healthy habits, faster."

Studies have shown that people who use Noom lose an average of 18 pounds or just over one stone in just 16 weeks.

Medical experts and studies have also backed Noom, with the British Medical Journal finding 64 per cent of Noom users have lost more than five per cent of their weight.

Second Nature

Offer: £15 off your first month of the programme (usually £40) or sign up with a friend and you'll both get £20 off your first month.

Find out more here.

Second Nature claims to be a “new way to lose weight” that is “build on science, not fad diets”.

It helps you create new healthy habits and abolish old ones, helping you lose weight by targeting nutrition, exercise, sleep and behaviour, and providing you with the same coach throughout the programme.

When you begin the 12-week programme, you're allocated into a group with others who are starting on the same day.

You get a package with a nutrition guide handbook and recipes, and can link your activity tracker.

After you finish the first 12 weeks, there are follow-on programmes to help you stick to your new healthy habits.

The plan is not too dissimilar from Noom, but Second Nature’s coaches are registered dietitians, the company says.
