Shocked grandad spots himself on TV news clip as five-year-old boy celebrating VE day in 1945

GRANDAD Tony Lister was amazed when he spotted himself as a cheering five-year-old on a grainy TV news clip.

He was filmed with his family among jubilant crowds celebrating VE day 75 years ago in 1945.

The young Tony — son of a Battle of Britain pilot — was chanting “We want the King” outside Buckingham Palace.

He was with mum Bobby and gran Esther gripping railings and clapping World War Two PM Winston Churchill and King George VI.

Tony, 80, remembers TV cameras at the Victory in Europe celebrations and has been hunting footage for 40 years.

So he was delighted to see himself on a BBC tribute he was recording.

He said: “After watching five minutes I realised I was on the screen.

“I was amazed. It brought back so many happy memories.”

Tony, whose dad, Dennis, flew Spitfires, added: “I remember being passed over the crowd to the front.”

The widower, a retired foundry worker of Halstead, Essex, wants to share the clip with his four grandchildren.
