Woman amazed after discovering fake Rolex is worth a fortune due to real gold

A woman was surprised when a pawnbroker revealed she could fetch a huge amount for a fake Rolex watch because it was made of real gold.

Andrea, a makeup artist from Yorkshire, was hoping to sell her three watches to move one step closer to her dream of having her own makeup studio.

Appearing on ITV's three-part show Million Pound Pawn, the mum-of-two explained that she had been given a gold Rolex watch and a gold pocket watch from her godfather before he died.

She also spent £25 on a silver-coloured "Rolex Daytona" from a car boot sale.

Andrea told London Road Jewellers & Pawnbrokers owner Dan Hatfield that she hoped to fetch £600 from the three watches to help out with her finannces during the pandemic.

She said: "I need something that's going to give me more stability. My dream would be to have my own makeup studio and hopefully, that would give me some sort of stability.

"Because I've not got any idea about this, I only have costume jewellery from Primark and River Island, but if I got £600 for the whole lot that would be good, something to just start me off, even if it's just to buy a bit of equipment."

Upon examining the watches, Dan revealed that the £25 Daytona was a fake because the weight was off and the wording on the design was not crisp enough.

Then he moved on to the gold Rolex watch with gem stones on the bezel and the dial.

He said: "If you look at the front of the watch, that winder does not look in place with the rest of the watch, that's far too big.

"But, although it's a fake Rolex, it is real gold. It's got a softness, you see, and it conducts temperature in a nice way as well, you can just feel that it's gold straight away."

Andrea raised her eyebrows and replied: "Really? But you're gonna smash my grandfather's watch up? I don't know."

She then agreed to destroy the watch to see how much gold it's worth and Dan took out a hammer to remove the metal pieces.

He placed them on a scale and did some calculations before telling Andrea: "So I'll buy this gold off you, then for £2,700.

"Does that make you feel better?"

As for the gold pocket watch, Dan said it is "a good one" and made an offer of £2,800 to Andrea, rounding the total offer to £5,500.

The astonished mum struck a deal with him and said: "That's definitely going to help. I actually can't believe it. I never get anything.

"I am stuck for words for once in my life. Amazing. I'm so happy.

"I'm definitely sad to see them go because they've been with me a long time but I know he'll be looking down and smiling on me today."
