There had been rumors for months that The Proud Family was coming back for Disney+. Now, the streaming service has officially confirmed the news that The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder revival series is moving full steam ahead.
The original helmers are back
The new series is currently in production at Disney Television Animation from series creator Bruce W. Smith and executive producer Ralph Farquhar. The two helmed the original series. For the revival, they are back with Calvin Brown, Jr. who is the show’s co-executive producer and story editor.
“In our minds, the show never really went away, as we still had tons of stories left to tell. It’s the perfect time to bring back this show, and we can’t wait to take fans, old and new alike, on this journey with us,” said Smith and Farquhar in the joint statement received by Showbiz Cheat Sheet.
The show seems to pick up where it left off, chronicling Penny Proud and what Disney+ calls her “madcap family” and “loyal crew.”
Agnes Chu, the senior vice president of content at Disney+ said in the statement, “The show’s humor and relatable stories are as relevant with audiences today as ever. Our audiences have loved rediscovering their favorite episodes of ‘The Proud Family,’ and we’re excited Bruce, Ralph, Calvin, and the returning cast are creating new stories for their new home on Disney+.”
Most of the original cast is confirmed
Confirmed by Disney+ to be returning in their original roles are prior cast members Kyla Pratt as Penny Proud, Tommy Davidson as Oscar Proud, Paula Jai Parker as Trudy Proud, Jo Marie Payton as Suga Mama, Karen Malina White as Dijonay Jones, Soleil Moon Frye as Zoey Howzer, and Alisa Reyes as LaCienega Boulevardez. Also, Cedric the Entertainer will return as Uncle Bobby Proud.
Most notably absent is Orlando Brown, who voiced Sticky Webb in the original series. Brown has been going through a lot in his personal life and his drug abuse has been chronicled in tabloid headlines for several years.
A few minor characters have not been confirmed, but surely characters are hoping that more people will return, such as Aries Spears as Wizard Kelly, Carlos Mencia as Felix Boulevardez and Maria Canals-Barrera as Sunset Boulevardez.
An official premiere date for the revival series is not yet known, but you should expect it within the next year on Disney+.
