The Masked Singer on FOX: Ken Jeong stunned as he fails to recognise co-star ‘I’m sorry!’

Luckily for TV talent show devotees, The Masked Singer was filmed months before the world’s current coronavirus crisis. This means the Fox series still has a vast roster of crazy characters to reveal before the year is up.

It may not be good news for all television fans that The Masked Singer is set to continue throughout the next few weeks.

However, the surreal celebrity talent show could become a reliable weekly staple during the coming months of self-isolation.

This week’s episode saw the return of comedian Joel McHale as a guest judge.

He and fellow judge Ken Jeong threw some serious shade at each other throughout the show, having played rivals and occasional reluctant friends Jeff Winger and Ben Chang for inventive NBC/Yahoo comedy series Community.

At one point the six foot four comedian described himself and Ken sitting next to each other as looking like “a before and after photo”.

Last week, the series introduced a whole new slate of mystery celebrities vying for first prize.

The new character roster includes the Bear, Astronaut, T-Rex, Rhino, Swan, and the mysterious Night Angel.

Before news of the coronavirus gripped the world, the revelation that former governor of Alaska Sarah Palin was behind the Bear’s performance of Baby’s Got Back would have been the most insane news story of the day.

While this week’s reveal was a little more on brand for the show, the judges were nevertheless rather shocked when actress and model Bella Thorne was revealed as the Swan.

After the episode aired, Nichole Scherzinger tweeted: “This show just keeps BLOWING my mind. #SwanMask is @bellathorne?!? I definitely didn’t see that coming!”

Swan’s clue package made reference to Bella’s horde of over 22 million social media followers, as well as the fact she grew up in Miami.

Season three judge Ken Jeong continued his characteristic trend by failing to guess one of his co-stars.

Previously guessing she could have been behind the Flamingo back in season two, Ken failed to recognise his friend’s voice this time round, despite co-starring in comedy film The DUFF in 2015.

He apologised, and Bella seemed forgiving when she was interviewed about her experience by host Nick Cannon.

She said: “Ken was guessing me as the Flamingo last season and I retweeted that and it made me super excited to watch the show. I thought it was so amazing, so dope and just thought ‘let’s do that!’”

Despite the clues, many fans were shocked when the reveal seemed to come out of left field.

One fan even went so far as to Tweet: “Bella Thorne is the last person I expected to be honest.”

Bella also confessed to being a little nervous performing in front of crowds, but Ken reassured her it didn’t come through in her brilliant performance of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ I Hate Myself for Loving You.

The actress has appeared in recent films such as Assassination Nation and The Babysitter, the latter of which is set to have a sequel released for Netflix.

The Masked Singer USA continues every Wednesday on Fox.
