The Handmaid’s Tale has depicted some pretty gruesome and horrifying scenes throughout the past three seasons so it comes as no surprise there have been a few “bizarre” moments on set. Ahead of the fourth season returning to Hulu, Commander Lawrence star Bradley spoke about how preparation for one particularly “brutal” moment, took him by surprise.

Bradley recalled: “The funny story on that set is we film in Canada and it’s well known Canadians, they are genetically and stereotypically the sweetest people on the planet.

“But then there’s these brutal moments where the AD will say something like, ‘Okay, I don’t want to rush you but I think we should get the nooses on the girls,’ you know.

“So there are bizarre horrible moments.”

However, he added it “always surprises people – I guess because the material is so dark – I find it to be one of the most gentle, loving sets that I’ve ever been on”.

Bradley noted he thinks this is down to lead actress Elisabeth Moss, who stars as June Osbourne.

“I always tell people, most of that comes from Lizzie who is, Lizzie means a lot to me,” he told Gold Derby.

“I’ve known her since she was 17, a young actress, who I then get to meet up with you know, at the height of her incredible career.

“Acting with her is one of the joys of my life, we don’t know where it’s going to go.”

The actor explained he finds it easy to work with Elisabeth and they both know when each other has connected with a scene.

“We both have a sense of, a simultaneous sense of when we’ve found a scene and we know when we haven’t,” he remarked.

“That performance is the performance of a generation. The degree of difficulty of what she’s doing is impossible to describe.

“She’s doing Sophie’s Choice, the series.”

However, Bradley noted despite how intense it can get on set, Elisabeth remains a hoy to be around.

“When you have to be in that type of emotional pain, you tend to get a little grumpy, I’ve never seen her get grumpy,” he said.

“She is at the centre of that show creatively, she knows, the drafts of the scripts. I’m incredibly impressed by her.”

Bradley’s comments come after Elisabeth teased the fourth season could see June find some happiness.

Speaking in the Metro’s Sixty Seconds column, she said: “Personally I’m very happy with the season and with June’s journey.

“No, well, I feel like this is gonna sound like a line but I think trying to predict as an audience where the season is going – you’re never going to get it!”

She added she feels June “is every women” and tells the story “of so many people who are just trying to survive extraordinary circumstances and under extraordinary challenges”.
