Speaking about his experience of playing the Monarch's husband, now 99, Tobias told Deadline: "He’s enjoyably a debunker. He pokes at unnecessary pomp and circumstance, he’s funny.

"What Olivia [Colman] and I built with the texture and atmosphere of that marriage I also came to really like.”

Tobias also enjoyed the experience of playing a real life person, being able to study endless reels of footage of the Prince during the 60s, 70s and 80s period covered by his two seasons on The Crown.

He added: "It’s been a really interesting character to explore. I will definitely miss the job.

“I really enjoyed playing someone who is alive and real. To have so much footage to watch and audio to listen to, I’d not experienced that before."

The star revealed season four was almost finished before being shut down by the coronavirus pandemic, but thinks the crew will be able to complete the season with the footage they've got and avoid any reshoots.

The cast are being joined by some new co-stars for season four including Gillian Anderson as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Emma Corrin as Princess Diana.

Hinting at what fans can expect, Tobias said: "In a way, the kids start to come into the foreground.
