Spoilers: Death trauma rocks Faye to the core in Corrie

Faye Windass (Ellie Leach)’s return to Coronation Street might be short-lived, as she was the cause of a tragic accident in the Street that left an old man dead.

The accident came about when Emma Brooker (Alexandra Mardell) agreed to give Faye driving lessons, and after a New Year’s Eve party Faye drove a still-tipsy Emma back home.

Ellie Leach describes what happened next. ‘Because Emma is still a bit tipsy, she is having fun, radio on, singing along. Faye is trying to concentrate, she is still learning and so wary in the car and trying to tell Emma to calm down, you’re stressing me out.’

And that’s when disaster struck. ‘This guy comes from nowhere and it just happens so fast, he steps out and they don’t see him until he’s right in front of them,’ says Ellie. ‘They don’t know if he’s alive or dead. Then it’s the shock of it all. Emma is tipsy, Faye has no license, she is praying that he is still alive.’

The girls were relieved when the old man, Ted (played by veteran comedian Duggie Brown) opened his eyes and said he was fine, and invited them to his flat for a cup of tea.

But Emma was shaken to hear from Imran (Charlie de Melo) that she shouldn’t have been in charge of a learner driver while she was under the influence of alcohol and he said that if they’d had an accident they’d be in a lot of trouble.

Emma and Faye decided to go back to Ted’s flat to check up on him and apologise – only to find him dead.

Ellie explains how Faye reacts to this discovery. ‘I think Faye’s first thought is oh my God, I am going back to prison. She is so worried about that she can’t even think about the fact they caused this man to die. I think that’s the overwhelming feeling. Then it’s what to do between her and Emma.’

With the horrific idea that she might end up straight back in prison looming in Faye’s mind, she and Emma decide to keep the accident a secret. ‘With Faye worrying about prison, she can’t have any more bad stuff. It’s only those two who know about it, so they don’t tell anyone. Will it all just go away?’
