Starz’s hit crime series Raising Kanan is the highly anticipated Power spin-off, which delved into the upbringing of Kanan Stark (played Mekai Curtis). Viewers have seen him rick his mother’s reputation on the streets but this time his latest blunder was at the expense of his cousin Jukebox (Hailey Kilgore) and viewers aren’t happy.
Fans were first introduced to Jukebox (Anika Noni Rose) in the original series of Power as a corrupt police officer.
She was also Kanan’s (50 Cent) beloved cousin and the two always had each other’s backs.
Jukebox was able to provide intel to her criminal, complicated cousin until the ultimate betrayal when he killed her.
Raising Kanan takes viewers back to 1991 when they were teenagers trying to find their footing on the brutal and dangerous streets of New York.
As well as showing fans why Kanan became the complicated character he was, they also got an insight into Jukebox’s upbringing.
With seven episodes down, she was a promising singer who wanted to use her voice as a tool to get her out of a life of crime.
Her family were head dead in dealing and distributing drugs across New York, but Jukebox’s friend Nicole Bingham (Annabelle Zasowski) was her escape.
She was from a rich family and studied at an affluent school, the two first met at a choir competition.
Although they were from wildly different backgrounds, the two sparked a romance and cautiously fell in love.
However, this all came to a head at the hands of Kanan when he cooked a deadly batch of crack cocaine.
In his effort to prove he was a man, he didn’t pay attention when his mother Raquel Thomas (Patina Miller) was teaching him and wiped out all the junkies in the city.
Jukebox had some in her bag and didn’t realise Nicole stole it. Nicole took a hit at home before they were supposed to meet for prom and died in her room.
Fans felt bad that Kanan’s actions had negatively impacted Jukebox and took to Twitter to share their thoughts.
One wrote: “Poor Juke, whole time she thinking Nicole stood her up but she died.”
“Dang, I hate that Juke’s beautiful voice is always a prelude to a death but at least the last voice Nicole heard was one of love,” a second shared.
Another said:“Kanan mistakes are always more costly for the people around him than he realizes, poor Jukebox.”
One frustrated viewer wrote: “Kanan should of just stayed in f*****g school, he keep f*****g up every time, 1 good idea don’t make you a King Pin Chile.”
In the episode, the two had come leaps and bounds, defying rules to be together.
They became official and although the prom was traditional and made girls wear dresses, Nicole encouraged Jukebox to wear whatever she felt comfortable in.
They both came out to their family members, Raq told Jukebox to be herself, unlike her father.
Nicole had to escape her borderline racist and homophobic mother to be with Jukebox.
Fans will have to stay tuned to see how she reacts when she discovers her first love is dead because of her cousin’s negligence.
