Production on the thrilling crime drama for the USA Network was postponed by the outbreak of coronavirus. However, after a revival in popularity following its release on Netflix UK, the star of Queen of the South has been teasing an unfortunate end for the rising drug lord. The star took to YouTube and answered some pressing fan questions.

The new drama series based on the Spanish telenovela La Reina del Sur follows Teresa Mendoza (played by Alice Braga) as she rises from poverty to power.

After establishing her new drug empire, Teresa faces off against the police and rival cartels throughout the exciting series.

Queen of the South was renewed for a fifth season last year, but fans are still eagerly awaiting the show’s return after production was postponed by coronavirus lockdown measures.

During the hiatus, the show’s lead star Alice Braga has taken to her personal YouTube page to tease the events of season five.

Although Teresa has just reunited with her ex-boyfriend James (Peter Gadiot) after the surprising cliffhanger in season four’s finale, she still has a long road ahead.

James’ shock return hinted at the introduction of another major threat, whilst Teresa is still set to face off against her new adversary, Judge Lafayette (David Andrews).

Braga gave Queen of the South fans a taste of the twists to come when she took to YouTube after the release of season four.

She said: “I love action, I love shooting action sequences. I think the more action we have in the show it’s so special and it puts Teresa on the edge of decisions.”

Teresa was thrown headfirst into the action in season four when she was caught in an explosion, sending her into a coma and even killing her innocent godson, Tony (Julian Silva).

As Braga continued to hype the continuation of the series, she gave viewers some idea of Teresa’s tragic fate when the series eventually concludes.

She added: “I do think it’s not gonna be easy for her to overpower a bunch of structures that existed before her in this drug world.”

Throughout the first three seasons, Teresa contended with the formidable Vargas Cartel, led by Camila (Veronica Falcón) and Epifañio Vargas (Joaquim de Almeida).

Camila was sent into exile at the end of season three while her husband was killed by Teresa in front of his family, paving the way for new threats to join the fold.

Moreover, Teresa may have also landed herself in hot water throughout season four after striking a deal with the Russians and taking over El Gordo’s (Pêpê Rapazote) operations.

Alice Braga is keeping her lips sealed for spoilers but may have inadvertently teased the eventual return of Camila during her appearance on YouTube.

She said: “What happened to Camila? She went into exile and, er, I don’t know! That’s why I keep saying keep watching!”

  • Queen of the South Teresa star Alice Braga on ‘heartbreaking’ death

Queen of the South has been compared favourably to similar crime shows like Breaking Bad and The Sopranos, which more often than not feature their protagonist’s fall from grace and tragic demise.

As Teresa’s influence grows, it’s becoming clear her enemies are getting more ferocious and the drug mogul continues to put herself in danger.

Whether it arises from a new threat or the return of a familiar face, fans may have to brace themselves for a grisly end for Teresa at some point in Queen of the South’s future.

Queen of the South season 4 is available to stream on Netflix.
