This Morning host Phillip Schofield was shocked after believing his co-host was handing in the towel live on air.

The presenter almost choked on his snack as his misheard Masterchef judge John Torode saying he wouldn't be able to come back on the show during the programme's cooking segment.

Toroide was whipping up savoury French toast and when suggesting what else could be used in the dish, mentioned crab.

Phil reminded him they hadn't cooked soft shell crab for a while then said he'd requested Scampi this week but "didn't get it".

Torode replied that he couldn't come back on the show to cook it, and 59-year-old Schofe looked taken aback as he asked: "What do you mean you can't come back?

He then asked again: "Why aren't you coming back?"

Torode explained that he meant he just couldn't return this week to which his relieved co-star added: "Only this week? I was going to say. I thought he had just resigned on air."
