Every month Netflix delivers some new movies for fans to devour, with some hotly anticipated original content among them. In May 2021, the focus is mainly on oldies but goodies on the UK platform, with fan favourites like School of Rock and Spider-Man: Far From Home arriving. Express.co.uk breaks down the best of the movies newly added to the platform, as well as the original content which will debut on Netflix.
Army of the Dead – arrives on May 21
Army of the Dead is the latest Zack Snyder movie, coming out not long after his triumphant cut of Justice League was a hit with fans.
This film, starring Marvel’s Dave Bautista, follows a group of mercenaries who become involved in a heist to find treasure in Las Vegas.
This would be a fun movie in itself, but Army of the Dead takes place as a zombie apocalypse threatens to decimate the planet.
Monster – arrives on May 7
This film was formerly known as All Rise and had its debut at the Sundance Film Festival that year.
Monster has been renamed and bounced between distributors for some time but is finally getting its airing for fans on Netflix.
The official synopsis reads: “Monster tells the story of Steve Harmon (played by Kelvin Harrison Jr.) a seventeen-year-old honor student whose world comes crashing down around him when he is charged with felony murder.
“The film follows his dramatic journey from a smart, likeable film student from Harlem attending an elite high school through a complex legal battle that could leave him spending the rest of his life in prison.”
The Woman in the Window – arrives May 12
Amy Adams stars in his thriller novel adaptation which has, like Monster, taken a while to get its release after it went through rewrites and delays.
In the movie, Amy’s character Dr Anna Fox is agoraphobic and stays inside her home, watching the world go by from the window.
She befriends her neighbour who suddenly disappears, and as she starts to investigate what could have happened, her own life is turned upside down and she begins to suspect she has lost grip on reality.
Dance of the Forty-One – arrives on May 12
Dance of the Forty-One is a Mexican film which shows a fictionalised version of real events.
The event was a scandal of the time and took place in Mexico in 1901 when a group of men attended a ball, which was then raided by police.
There 19 of the men were found dressed in women’s clothes, which was unheard of at the time, while a 42nd man was believed to have been excused due to his connections to the president of Mexico.
