Law and Order: SVU fans were ecstatic when former star Christopher Meloni announced he would be returning as Detective Elliot Stabler this year in a new spin-off series, titled Law and Order: Organized Crime. As the show’s finale airs in a couple of weeks, fans are curious as to how Stabler’s showdown with crime boss Richard Wheatley (played by Dylan McDermott) will play out.
Law and Order: Organized Crime star Christopher Meloni left his show’s predecessor, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, in 2011.
His departure from the show greatly upset fans who were hoping for many more years of Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Stabler on-screen together.
After the longest-running primetime series returned for its monumental 22nd season in November 2020, fans were delighted to see Stabler again in the new spin-off show, Organized Crime.
The new series focuses on Stabler and his family as he joins an NYPD organised crime task force to stop a powerful crime syndicate.
Stabler’s wife Kathy (Isabel Gillies) was brutally murdered recently, leaving the beloved detective distraught as he goes up against businessman and crime boss Richard Wheatley.
Wheatley is highly suspected to be behind Kathy’s murder after she was killed in a car bombing.
Stabler has struggled recently and his immense guilt over failing to save his wife has led to a reunion with former partner Olivia Benson on SVU.
The two friends reunited during the ninth episode of SVU, Return of the Prodigal Son, which also served as a crossover event for Organized Crime.
Since Meloni’s return to the world of Law and Order, he has continually butted heads with Wheatley, and the actor has revealed that a showdown will definitely happen soon between the two.
Speaking at a junket [via Deadline], stars Meloni and McDermott teased fans on what they have to look forward to as the season one finale approaches.
Meloni said: “We have an altercation or two, or an interaction or two.
“You know, our courses must intersect. I think [Wheatley’s] going to get the short end of that deal”.
Meloni also promised fans that, while questions will be answered, other crucial questions will arise for the character, promising it’s “going to be a continuing saga”.
Aside from his wife’s death, other complications for Stabler are arising since he is romantically interested in Wheatley’s ex-wife Angela (Tamara Taylor).
Discussing the storyline, Meloni stated, “that’s a very tangled area”, and that Stabler wasn’t used to being in the position he currently finds himself in.
Wheatley, described by McDermott as “a family man”, will not be pleased if a relationship begins between the two, it’ll make their current conflict all the worse.
“I think he is lost in that world,” Meloni added, discussing his character’s struggle on the show and inevitable showdown with Wheatley.
Organized Crime is once again created by Dick Wolf, as well as Ilene Chaiken and Matt Olmstead, and the show is developed by Warren Leight and Julie Martin.
It is the seventh spin-off in the immensely popular Law and Order franchise.
Meloni, who returns after a decade-long absence, stars alongside Danielle Moné Truitt as his new partner Sgt. Ayanna Bell, and co-stars alongside Tamara Taylor, Ainsley Seiger, and Dylan McDermott.
Law and Order: SVU airs Thursdays in the US on NBC, followed immediately by Law and Order: Organized Crime.
