‘It’s MADNESS!’ Piers Morgan hits out at Labour over gender self-identification in GMB row

Piers Morgan was embroiled in a heated discussion with Labour leadership candidate Lisa Nandy over her stance on gender self-identification. The Good Morning Britain host questioned whether Ms Nandy would be open to allow people to self-identify with their preferred gender, hitting out at the Wigan MP for failing to provide a “straight” answer to his questions. The pair clashed on the topic for well-over 10 minutes, with the discussion growing heated and over-running the segment.

Mr Morgan took particular issue with the Labour MP’s failure to answer questions on “how many genders are there” and whether “babies are born with a gender”.

The GMB host said: “You do think babies are born male or female?

“How many genders are there? You might be Labour leader in three weeks, this is a raging social issue. Lisa this is a serious question.”

Ms Nandy said: “Yeah, but then people come to terms with their own gender and their own identity. It is not for me to tell them who they are.

“There are people who are gender-neutral.”

The Good Morning Britain then proceeded to challenge Ms Nandy on claims her colleague Dawn Butler made in the past while appearing on the show in regards to gender.

Mr Morgan said: “I find it very confusing and when you have Labour frontbenchers saying babies are born with no sex, I’m like, ‘what are you talking about?’

“It’s madness, isn’t it?”

Ms Nandy however insisted the gender self-identification debate is not “so hard” to fully understand, adding: “I don’t know why this is so hard. Babies are born, they are designated with a biological sex.

“They are assigned a sex based on their physical attributes but then they grow into adults and for some young people that becomes a really problematic thing indeed and they define their own identity.”

She added: “When you are born, they determine your gender by looking at physical attributes.

“You are designated a biological sex and then, as we have seen in recent years, that becomes a really problematic thing.”

Appearing on Good Morning Britain last month, deputy leadership candidate Dawn Butler made the controversial claim that “a child is born without sex at the beginning.”

Ms Butler however appeared to change her view soon after the backlash began taking over social media.

Writing on her personal Twitter, the Labour frontbencher said: “Of course you are born a boy or a girl.

“No one is denying that and it is ridiculous to state otherwise.”

The MP for Brent Central commented about her appearance on GMB arguing “it was a ridiculous interview, they fired questions at me and did not allow me to finish my sentences.”

The Labour politician said that it was not appropriate to discuss the subject on GMB because “you cannot answer trans issues in soundbites.”
