'House of the Dragon': Fans of 'The Crown' Will Recognize 1 Familiar Face

The Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon is currently in production. At long last, HBO has given fans a glimpse of what they can expect to see when the highly anticipated series finally debuts.

From the new stills, it looks like our return to Westeros will be well worth it. Fans of The Crown will also see a familiar face.

What will ‘House of the Dragon’ be about?

Set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin’s book, Fire & Blood. The series will chronicle the reign of the Targaryen family in the Seven Kingdoms.

Veteran Game of Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik, who directed the legendary episodes “The Battle of the Bastards” and “The Winds of Winter,” will act as showrunner along with Ryan Condal.

This is the first Game of Thrones spinoff to get a series order after the Naomi Watts-led prequel didn’t get off the ground. “That is a big swing,” HBO programming president Casey Bloy told Deadline. “One of the things about House of Dragons, there is a text, there is a book, so that made it a little bit more of a road map for a series order.”

When will ‘House of the Dragon’ premiere?

House of the Dragon doesn’t have a release date just yet, but fans are already thrilled by some of the first images from the series that HBO has released. From what we understand, HBO is set to release season 1 “sometime in 2022.”

We also know that the first season of the show will consist of 10-episodes, and hopefully, if it’s renewed, we will get 10 episodes consistently.

‘The Crown’ fans will recognize a familiar face in ‘House of the Dragon’

If you’re a fan of Netflix’s The Crown, which chronicles Queen Elizabeth II’s life from her wedding in 1947 and into the modern-day, then you may have to reset your brain when returning to Westeros in 2022. Matt Smith, who starred as Prince Philip in the first two seasons of The Crown, has a starring role in House of the Dragon.

Smith will play Prince Daemon Targaryen, the younger brother of King Viserys Targaryen and heir to the throne. According to his character description, Daemon Targaryen is “a peerless warrior and a dragonrider who possesses the true blood of the dragon.”

Instead of watching him in a Royal Navy uniform, we’re going to get used to seeing Smith in a white blond wig.

In addition to The Crown actor, Bates Motel’s Olivia Cooke, Truth Seekers star Emma D’Arcy, Peaky Blinders’ Paddy Considine and Steve Toussaint will also star in the series.

Considine will portray King Viserys Targaryen, who was is “a warm, kind, and decent man.”  Cooke portrays the daughter of the Hand of the King, Otto Hightower. She is described as the “most comely woman in the Seven Kingdoms.” D’Arcy is Rhaenyra Targaryen, the king’s first-born child. Toussaint will play Lord Corlys Velaryon also known as ‘The Sea Snake.’ He is an adventurous seaman and Lord of House Velaryon.
