It may have seemed impossible at times, but 2020 is ending and 2021 is right around the corner, and with the new year comes all kinds of new entertainment to look forward to—including tons of highly anticipated movies. Being that theaters were and are still closed in many places and most of us were staying home a lot more than usual, we missed out on seeing a lot of new films on the big screen… not to mention the fact that there have been all kinds of filming and release date delays on movies that were supposed to come out soon.
There is a silver lining to this, though, and it means that 2021 is going to be a huge year for movies, including many of the ones that have been delayed.
Whether we’re catching them on demand or in the theaters, here are the movies we can look forward to in the coming year. Full disclosure, some of these dates mightttt still change depending on what happens with the pandemic.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife
While this Ghostbusters movie does include some of the original movie’s beloved cast members (like Dan Aykroyd), it’s actually telling a brand new story about a single mom and her kids moving to a farm in Oklahoma, where they learn about their family’s ties to the original Ghostbusters. Finn Wolfhard, McKenna Grace, and Paul Rudd star in this movie, which will be released June 21, 2021.
Cinderella
Yes, we’re getting another live action take on Cinderella, but this one will be a little different. Starring Camila Cabello in the title role, this version of the classic story will also include brand new, original music. Set to hit theaters February 5, 2021, the movie also boasts an incredible cast including Billy Porter, Idina Menzel, John Mulaney, Missy Elliott, and more.
A Quiet Place Part II
The sequel to A Quiet Place was set to be released in 2020, but the movie got pushed back to April 23, 2021 instead, picking up with Emily Blunt’s character where the original movie left off as she continues attempting to survive in a world where she and her kids must be silent or risk being killed.
Raya and the Last Dragon
Is anyone really going to turn down another animated Disney movie? In Raya and the Last Dragon, Degrassi star Cassie Steele voices the main character as she searches for the last dragon in the world. This one is out March 12, 2021, and also stars Awkwafina and Kelly Marie Tran.
Black Widow
It feels like we’ve been waiting to see Black Widow forever, and 2021 is when it’s finally happening. After appearing in the Avengers franchise as Natasha Romanoff, Scarlett Johansson’s character is finally getting to star in her own story, which is due to come out on May 7, 2021.
Cruella
Emma Stone is playing a live-action version of Cruella de Vil, and there’s no way this isn’t going to be amazing. Set to be released on May 28, 2021, this movie will tell Cruella’s backstory—you know, what happened to her before she wanted to skin 101 puppies to create a coat.
