The Great British Bake Off smashed their Channel 4 viewing record as millions tuned into the final of the sweet favourite to see Peter Sawkins win.
After a nail-biting finale, fans from across the country made it their must-watch moment of the Autumn – peaking at a staggering 10.4 million.
Earning a 39.7% share of TV viewers in that time slot, the Channel 4 team averaged at a just as impressive 9.2million.
It’s the show’s biggest audience ever since moving to Channel 4 from the BBC.
Peter beat David Friday and Laura Adlington on Tuesday evening to raise the coveted cake stand and join the Bake Off Hall of Fame.
The 20-year-old finance is the youngest baker ever to take home the win.
In a full-circle moment, he revealed he was inspired to try his luck in the kitchen after becoming addicted to watching the show.
The episode was dedicated to the crew that made filming the show possible, and also former baker Luis Troyano, who died last month.
Peter had consistently impressed throughout his time on the show, including his memorable showstoppers.
He has now returned to his studies, and managed to keep his win hiding from his friends until Tuesday night.
In the traditional goodbye letter, Peter wrote: ‘That was the best summer of my life, no question. I feel blessed to have been given this opportunity.
‘I have lived out a crazy childhood dream, I have grown from being stretched with new challenges and most importantly, I have met some wonderful people and made great friends’
‘The bubble really was a place filled with joy and that came from the people within it,’ he continued.
‘The judges, presenters, crew, hotel staff, fellow bakers and everyone else in the bubble brought fantastic energy to the community, even when so many gave up so much and were away from family and loved ones for a long time.
‘I have to say a huge thanks to everyone for bringing this energy and helping to make the whole experience pure fun!’
