Ben Shephard joked he looks like RoboCop as he detailed the horrific injury he suffered during a football match.

The 46 year old returned to Good Morning Britain on Thursday after a short break, where his co-host Susanna Reid encouraged him to speak about his injuries as she teased fans about his unusual appearance.

Susanna, 50, told viewers: "I wish I'd taken a photograph in my dressing room this morning because Ben came in with quite the get up on your leg. You had a sort of holding device."

Ben confirmed: "A brace. I have, a few weeks ago, I played in the cup final of the Arthur Dunn Veterans' Cup.

"We won the cup final, however, without realising I have ruptured my ACL, I've torn the meniscus and I've fractured part of my leg as well."

Susanna called on the advice of the ITV show's regular doctor Hilary Jones, who said: "That is a nasty injury. It's not a great look, is it? To be honest."

Ben joked: "It looks a bit Robocop-esque," before explaining how he didn't immediately realise the extent of his injury.

"To be honest, I didn't realise I'd done it quite so bad, I carried on playing for about 20, 25 minutes before I thought it felt a bit unstable and stopped.

"It turns out I'd severed all the nerves, which is why I couldn't feel any pain and just carried on playing," he continued as Susanna was heard wincing.

Dr Hilary added: "Basically, this is the ligament that holds the lower leg onto the upper leg. So it is quite dramatic."

Ben told his 473,000 Instagram followers how he had reunited with his school friends for the first time in over two decades to play the match.
