Ever since the announcement of a Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon, would be coming to HBO Max in 2022, fans have been waiting with bated breath for photos of the cast. A recent table read of the series united the new cast for the first time and created more buzz for the forthcoming show.
HBO’s smash hit Game of Thrones continues to be one of the biggest and most critically-acclaimed shows in the world, despite the final season airing in 2019.
Since its finale, audiences have been disheartened over the news that HBO decided not to move forward with the Naomi Watts-led spin-off show Bloodmoon.
However, news of a prequel series House of the Dragon, which was greenlit in 2019, has created excitement amongst fans about returning to Westeros.
The show’s cast and heavy involvement from author George RR Martin has left fans eager to find out more about the series.
The prequel will be set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones and will focus on the rise and fall of House Targaryen during the blood-soaked Targaryen Civil War.
The series star-studded cast includes Paddy Considine as King Viserys Targaryen I, Olivia Cooke as his wife Alicent Hightower, and Matt Smith as Viserys’ younger brother Prince Daemon Targaryen.
Emma D’Arcy will also star as Rhaenyra Targaryen, Viserys’ daughter and future first ruling Queen of Westeros.
Popular character actor Rhys Ifans also joined the cast as Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King.
A recent table read of House of the Dragon is sending fans into a frenzy, as many continue to guess the storylines of the upcoming series.
This is the first time the actors have been pictured together during rehearsals and dedicated Game of Thrones fans can’t get enough.
One Twitter user commented on a photo of Smith, writing: “Good casting there.”
While another could barely contain her excitement, typing: “I just love the cast like can’t wait to see them dressed up as their characters.”
Star Smith spoke to Radio Times recently about his excitement for the upcoming show, saying: “I think it’ll be a really exciting cast.
“I think it’s a wonderful legacy to be part of and it’s a great part.”
He further teased, “And without saying too much, I’m just sort of looking forward to riding a few dragons… if I get to.”
Smith further added that he knows as little as viewers do, saying: “Who knows what goes on in this role.”
“I’m just looking forward to getting started,” he continued, sharing the same thoughts as patient fans.
House of the Dragon is created by George RR Martin and Ryan Condal, based on Martin’s novel, Fire & Blood.
The series will be executive produced by Martin, Condal, Vince Gerardis, and Game of Thrones’ frequent director Miguel Sapochnik, who directed the epic Battle of the Bastards episode.
The 10-episode series will be heading to HBO Max sometime in 2022.
