The Legend of El Cid is a new drama which is due to arrive on Amazon Prime Video on December 18. The series is set during the medieval period and it follows Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, known as El Cid, as he defies the monarchy that looks to control him. Who is in the cast of El Cid?

El Cid – Jaime Lorente

El Cid is the main character in the series and he is a real-life figure from Spanish history who is still widely respected to this day.

Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar was a military legend who lived from 1043 until 1099, and he was known for leading many a battle during his time.

He became famous for his service to both Christian and Muslim armies, and he led a conquest of Valencia.

His character is played by Jaime Lorente, who is best known for his role as Denver in Netflix’s hit series, Money Heist.

The 29-year-old actor has also starred in the Netflix teen drama Elite, and El secreto de Puente Viejo.

He has more than 15million followers on Instagram, and he shared some posters ahead of the release of El Cid, saying: “I cannot feel more emotion to present this story that we have built with so much love. A team that has been and is family, you cannot miss it [translated].”

Infanta Urraca – Alicia Sanz

Infanta Urraca, otherwise known as Urraca of Zamora, was one of the five children of Ferdinand I the Great.

She gained the city of Zamora as part of her inheritance and she ruled there until her retirement when she moved to a monastery in Leon.

Her character is played by Alicia Sanz, a Spanish actress who is known for her roles in Shots Fired and #Realityhigh.

She began her career at a young age, taking classes in her hometown at the Dramatic Center of Ceuta.

Her first lead role was at the age of eight, and it marked the start of an extremely fruitful career.

Fernando I El Grande – José Luis García Pérez

Ferdinand I the Great was the County of Castile and the King of León during the early 1000s, and he was believed to be the first to have himself crowned as Emperor of Spain.

El Cid was brought up in Ferdinand’s court and had served Ferdinand’s son, Sancho.

His character is played by José Luis García Pérez, an actor from Seville who has previously starred in Buried, Holmes & Watson: Madrid Days, and Bear Cub.

His most recent appearance was in an episode of The Mallorca Files, as the character Javier. He is mostly known for his roles in Spanish series, such as Diarios de la cuarentena and Secretos de Estado.

Conde de León – Carlos Bardem

The Count of Leon is played by Carlos Bardem, and the Spanish actor shared a photo of himself with his fellow co-stars for the launch of the series.

He said: “An honor and a privilege to present El Cid in a place as beautiful as Burgos Cathedral. And happy to be part of this super production of @zebra_producciones for @primevideoes, along with wonderful colleagues like the ones in this photo and like so many others that are missing.

“It premieres worldwide on 12/18 on @primevideoes and is a spectacular and exciting series. We wait for yo [translated].

The star also refers to himself as a writer and traveller, and he has previously starred in Diarios de la cuarentena, El Señor de los Cielos and Club de Cuervos.

Jimena – Lucía Guerrero

Jimena, or Doña Jimena Díaz, was the wife of El Cid and she married him sometime between 1074 and 1076.

She stood by her husband during his periods of exile and even found herself and her children imprisoned in 1089.

She became the Lady of Valencia after her husband’s death, until 1102.

Her character is played by Lucía Guerrero, an actress from Madrid who is known for her roles in Sister of Mine and Sorry If I Call You Love.

One of her first roles was at the age of 15, and since then she split her time between work and studying.

The historical drama also stars Jaime Olías as Alfonso VI, Elia Galera as Sancha la Bella and Juan Echanove as Obispo, to name but a few others.

El Cid airs on Amazon Prime Video on December 18
