EastEnders star Tony Clay has opened up about his dad’s battle with the coronavirus.
The actor — who portrays Callum ‘Halfway’ Highway in the BBC One soap — revealed all in scenes which viewers can see in Monday’s Secrets From The Square.
Speaking to Stacey Dooley about his lockdown experience, Tony said: ‘It’s been a bit of a strange time for me.
‘My dad was hospitalised with the coronavirus. For two months in hospitals — three different hospitals.
‘It was a hard hard time — on my dad, on my family, on everyone as a nation, really. Everyone going through this.’
Stacey — who hosts the EastEnders spin-off series — then asked how his dad was doing now, and Tony said: ‘He is [on the mend]! Yes, he is.
‘He’s finally home, so I’m very, very, very happy. And a bit overwhelmed by it all.’
The actor had previously revealed his dad’s battle with Covid-19 back in May when he tweeted: ‘After 4 weeks on a ventilator in intensive care, a tracheostomy & a 9 week stay in 3 different hospitals, today my Dad is finally home!!
‘THANK YOU NHS!!! You are true angels & I love you all. So much love to anyone going through this right now. There is hope x’
EastEnders was forced to shut down production amid the pandemic, and remaining pre-lockdown episodes were rationed out in order to keep it on the air for as long as possible.
The final episode aired on June 16, and therefore the soap was forced to go off the air.
However, Secrets From The Square has been filling the Monday slot nicely, and it won’t be long until the serial drama is back on screens now that filming has resumed.
One to watch: Monday 13 July at 8pm on BBC One
