Coronation Street's Maureen Lipman reveals when older characters will return

Coronation Street’s Maureen Lipman has revealed when the older cast members will be returning to the cobbles.

The soap is already back filming amid the coronavirus lockdown, meaning that it won’t be going off air – instead remaining at three weekly episodes for the time being.

However, not all characters have returned to Weatherfield, with those over 70 and with underlying health conditions staying home.

And, during an appearance on Good Morning Britain, the Evelyn Plummer actress revealed this will come to an end in a few months.

‘There is an element now of people, particularly in my business… You used to be able to waitress when you weren’t working but now there’s nowhere to waitress,’ she told host Lorraine.

‘So it is tough. I’m very aware that I’m incredibly lucky to have Coronation Street to look forward to in September when the wrinklies get unrolled.’

Boris Johnson announced on 23 June that the restrictions have been eased – with the two-metre distance rule scrapped to ‘one metre plus’.

The Prime Minister also confirmed pubs, hotels and restaurants would be allowed to re-open from 4 July.

And Coronation Street bosses explained they will be discussing how this will impact their filming in future.

A spokesperson for the show told ‘As and when the Government makes further health and safety announcements, we’ll implement those guidelines.

‘Our priority has always been the health and safety of all our colleagues, but hopefully through clever direction, great performances and storytelling the precautions we’re taking in front of the camera won’t be too noticeable to viewers.

‘For those who do notice hopefully they’ll understand and appreciate the circumstances under which we’re filming.’

Good Morning Britain continues on weekdays, at 6am, on ITV.
