Coronation Street’s Laura star Kel Allen wows fans with real age after mix-up

Coronation Street’s Kel Allen left fans speechless as they found out her real age on social media.

The actress has been playing Kelly Neelan’s mum Laura in the ITV soap for the past year, and was recently killed off after a tragic battle with stomach cancer.

Her mum’s death left Kelly devastated, especially as she didn’t get to say goodbye to her at the end of her life, after Laura falsely confessed to the murder of Kelly’s dad Rick.

It makes sense that fans were disconcerted to learn that Kel was apparently only in her 20s in real life, after playing such a convincing part of 16-year-old Kelly’s mum on the soap.

Various online sources have reported that she was born in 1992, with fans assuming she was 28 or 29 years old.

One wrote on Facebook: “I’ve only recently found out that Kel Allen who plays Laura is only 28 years old. I thought that she was much older than that.

“She’s a great actress and very attractive though. I loved her character, wish she had stayed in it longer. She’ll be missed.”

Another added: “If she is 28 then she's young to be playing the mother of a teenage daughter!”

However, Kel was soon forced to clear up those rumours on her social media, as she explained she’d actually been mistaken for someone else with the same name.

Kel explained: “Some fun facts about moi…

“I’m not 28, throw on another decade! I’m proud to be rocking it for the nana crew! FYI… I’m not a nana, just close to middle age. It’s a northern expression of speech.

“Let’s do the math, Laura would have given birth to Kelly at the age of 11.

“I wasn’t born in London, proud of my northern roots! I was born in Sept, not in May.

“I never lost an arm in a canoeing accident… touch wood! I’m not an Olympian… if only!

“The moral of the story… don’t believe everything you read! Happy Sunday to you.”

It turns out Kel – who landed her first acting role in a 1996 episode of Children’s Ward – had been mistaken for paracanoeist Kelly Allen, who lost her leg, not her arm.

On her acting CV, Kel says she can play parts aged between 35 and 45 years old.

Fans were in hysterics in the comments section, with one posting: “You’re an absolute beauty babe, love you lots!”

“Haha that’s funny, love ya!” someone else said.

As a third fan gushed: “Stunning lady!”
