Narcos: Mexico season two was released earlier this year on Netflix for fans to follow the downfall of drug boss ‘el padrino’ Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo. In the series he is played by actor Diego Luna whose depiction of the real-life figure has been widely praised.
Why did Diego Luna refuse to meet the real Felix Gallardo?
The first two seasons of Narcos Mexico on Netflix mainly feature the story of Felix Gallardo.
As fans of the show will know, he was a Mexican drug dealer who helped form the Guadalajara Cartel in the 1970s.
By the 1980s, he was in charge of almost all of the drug trafficking in Mexico and the border between the US which made it possible.
However, as the second season of Narcos: Mexico shows, this was not to last for the well-known drug kingpin.
- Narcos Mexico season 3: Will Walt Breslin return for another series?
By the end of the 1980s, he had lost much of his power and was arrested by Mexican authorities in 1989.
He is currently serving a 37-year sentence in a Mexican prison and it is expected he will be out in 2026.
Although when it came to portraying him, actor Diego Luna revealed he did not consult with the real-man at all.
He spoke to Variety about this ahead of the second season of the show, explaining he did not think he would gain much from an interview.
Luna told the publication: “There is a very long interview he gives that I read, but then I realised it was more useful for me to read what people said about him.
“I think if I ask you who you are, you might say half-truths, but if I ask the people around you what stamp you left in their lives, I might understand who you were.”
The actor also told Entertainment Tonight how he would try to ignore any requests to speak to him or those around him if they came.
He explained: “If that ever happens, I will try to ignore it as much as possible.
“It’s not something I need to know. To me, the purpose of doing this is what can be said about the big picture.

Narcos Mexico season 3: Will Diego Luna return as Felix Gallardo?
“I’m not here to give you a take or an angle no one has seen before, because that would be pretentious. And also, it’s not a character that you can find anywhere.
“It’s not like Escobar, where you have documentaries, you have other films, you have recordings, you have books, you have notes.
“Gallardo is pretty much a character that people don’t actually know, so that gave me some freedom.”
Now the second season has come to an end, fans of the show are eager to know if there will be a third outing of the show.
Nothing has been confirmed so far but if it does it has been confirmed Luna will not be back to reprise his role.
- Narcos Mexico: Was Kiki Camarena really kidnapped and tortured?
This was confirmed by series showrunner Eric Newman to The Hollywood Reporter.
He said: “But I do think [this is our goodbye to that character]. Diego is going off to a galaxy far, far away!
“He’ll always be with us in spirit and, honestly, what an incredible privilege to work with him the last two years. I love him.”
Instead, viewers will be able to see him next in the Disney+ live-action series about his Star Wars character Cassian Andor.
