The real reason Joe Exotic got into the zoo business

Joe Exotic, Carole Baskin, and Doc Antle.  These names are everywhere nowadays, along with the rest of the characters in Netflix’s hottest docuseries, Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness. While some stars are a little more villainous and eccentric than others, every cast member is captivating in their own right, especially where it concerns Joe. For instance, how did the Kansas native become the owner of Oklahoma’s Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park? And when did he first become entranced by exotic zoo animals?

As it turns out, Joe — who is serving a 22-year sentence for wildlife violations and a murder-for-hire plot — first became interested in animals thanks to his brother, Garold Schreibvogel, according to Texas Monthly. Garold once supposedly “confided in Joe that he hoped one day to live in the wild in Africa so he could see the beautiful beasts there running free.”

After high school, Joe worked as a police officer and became the chief when he was just 19, per Texas Monthly. Around this time, one of Joe’s siblings informed their parents that he was gay and, in response, their father shook Joe’s hand and made him promise he wouldn’t attend his funeral. Understandably, this experience was devastating to Joe and he allegedly tried to drive his police cruiser off of a bridge. Joe was left with severe injuries and moved from the family’s home in Texas to West Palm Beach, Fla., to recover.

What happened next? Stay with us to find out.

It all started with Pet Safari

While recovering in Florida, Joe Exotic became close to his neighbor, a man named Tim, who owned a pet store. Tim had a friend who worked at a drive-through zoo, and this friend would occasionally bring home baby animals, allowing Joe to play with baby monkeys and lions, according to New York Magazine. Joe said “he was broken and those little critters helped put him back together,” according to the outlet.

A few years later, in Texas, Joe and his brother, Garold Schreibvogel, bought a pet store called Pet Safari. Joe and his brother started with “reptiles, birds, and small fish” but gradually got more unusual animals, like armadillos, according to Texas Monthly.

Sadly, just as the store was gaining traction, Garold was hit by a drunk driver outside of Dallas and died in October 1997, according to Texas Monthly. Joe’s family won $140,000 in a lawsuit over Garold’s death, and Joe convinced his parents to spend the money on a memorial zoo. So Joe bought an old horse farm in Wynnewood, Okla. and dubbed it: The Garold Wayne Exotic Animal Memorial Park.

Joe Exotic finally gets his tigers

Joe Exotic only had a deer and a buffalo, belonging to his brother, Garold Schreibvogel, to feature at the G.W. Zoo when it first opened, according to Texas Monthly. But when word spread that there was an exotic animal park, people started dropping off animals they could no longer take care of. First came a mountain lion, then a bear, followed in 2000 by two tigers who had been abandoned in a backyard. These two tigers bred, and Joe and his husband at the time, Brian Rhyne, raised the cubs in their living room, just like the zookeeper had done back in Texas. More and more people dropped off their exotic animals until Joe had a packed zoo.

Amazingly, Joe wasn’t initially interested in breeding tigers, according to New York Magazine, because he knew that they were “mean” and expensive to feed when fully grown. However, he quickly realized that tiger cubs, and the fees involved with petting them, could offset the growing costs of the zoo.

So this became his financial plan until, as New York Magazine noted, Joe became “the largest breeder of tigers in the country.” But this financial solution soon proved tricky, and the rest, as they say, is history.

The real reason Meghan Markle and Harry are in a better place with the royal family

If family members are willing to work through their differences and see things from each other’s perspectives, most issues can be overcome — that seems to apply to the royals in Britain, as well. The monarchy was thrown into turmoil when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced in January 2020 that they were stepping back from their official roles and duties. While the situation appeared to be quite dire for a while — and included a possible punishment as well as an awkward encounter — the family now seems to be focused on trying to move forward.

“Things are in a better space now between the couple and the royal family,” according to a source who opened up to Entertainment Tonight on March 23, 2020. “While of course there have been tensions, the family is getting through it.”

This is surely a good thing for Harry who was reportedly having a hard time leaving his family and may have been suffering in the aftermath of Megxit. These days, he’s likely feeling pretty darn great if he’s adjusting to his new life as well as his wife seems to be.

Meghan Markle has 'never been happier' and it's easy to understand why

Although Prince Harry and Meghan Markle faced a bumpy road when they decided to change up their royal roles, it looks like their tough decision is already paying off. Not only is the situation with the rest of the family apparently smoothing over, but a source told Us Weekly that “Meghan feels free. She has never been happier. She’s happy to be out of London.”

That’s understandable considering the “British tabloids were ruthless to Meghan Markle,” per Global News. The former actress, who has experience in the spotlight, admitted during an ITV documentary (via People) that while she was warned before marrying Harry that “the British tabloids [would] destroy [her] life, she explained: “I never thought that this would be easy, but I thought it would be fair.” It certainly didn’t seem to be fair at all if you take a look at just how differently Markle and Middleton are treated by the press.

While this makes it quite clear why the Duchess of Sussex would want to leave England ASAP, the US Weekly insider also acknowledged that Markle “was surprised at how quickly everything happened.” That may be the case, but judging by her joy-filled final appearances in Britain with her husband at the beginning of March 2020, these two are definitely ready to begin a new life together with their son, Archie, in their Canadian home.

And honestly, who wouldn’t be thrilled to live in a $14 million mansion on the water with their very own prince charming?

The real reason Andy Cohen won’t release Real Housewives episodes early

Talk show host Andy Cohen, who serves as an executive producer of the Real Housewives franchise, talked about the effects of the coronavirus on his Bravo reality series. Talking to Sirius XM’s Reality Checked with Amy Phillips, Cohen revealed that fans have been begging him to drop The Real Housewives of New York and The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills early because so many folks are staying home and would love the entertainment. Why won’t Cohen give us something new to binge-watch during this time of crisis?

The explanation is practical. Cohen said that “there are only a certain amount of episodes that are totally color-corrected and locked right now, for both of those shows.” He added that another reason he can’t rush the release is because the team is still working on plans to enable people to edit the shows remotely. In this case, working from home will also take longer. “If we released all [the episodes] now, we would wind up screwing ourselves in the end, so that’s the issue,” he said. “…I just think we need to be focused.”

Cohen also has a serious problem of his own to contend with.

Andy Cohen tests positive for the coronavirus

While production for the Real Housewives franchise is slowing because of the coronavirus, Andy Cohen has also learned that he’s tested positive for the illness. Cohen shared his diagnosis on Instagram: “After a few days of self-quarantine, and not feeling great, I have tested positive for Coronavirus.” He added, “As much as I felt like I could push through whatever I was feeling to do [Watch What Happens Live] from home, we’re putting a pin in that for now so I can focus on getting better. I want to thank all the medical professionals who are working tirelessly for all of us, and urge everybody to stay home and take care of themselves.”

Cohen is among a growing list of celebrities who’ve tested positive for COVID-19, so it’s become clear that every facet of the entertainment industry is feeling the effects of illness, social-distancing, and an economic slowdown. Though avid fans are missing the drama of the Real Housewives, we can all agree that Andy Cohen’s health and safety is the priority.

The Real Reason Why Naomi Campbell Wore a Hazmat Suit Through LAX

Naomi Campbell is one of the most famous models in the world. She rose to fame in the 1980s and 1990s, and soon became a supermodel who was recognizable even to people who did not know much about fashion.

Campbell recently made headlines when she wore a hazmat suit through LAX. Given the situation surrounding COVID-19 in the world right now, it is understandable that many people want to take safety measures when flying. However, wearing a full-on hazmat suit is still largely unheard of, so Campbell decided to share her reasoning behind her unique outfit.

Naomi Campbell admits that she was ‘nervous’ about flying

After sharing pictures of herself in a hazmat suit at LAX, Campbell posted a video to her YouTube channel called “Protecting Myself Against Coronavirus.” In the video, Campbell gave fans a detailed look into the preparations for her flight from Los Angeles to New York City.

“As this is a very sensitive time in the world, I’m not going to lie to you and say I’m not nervous to take this flight…I am,” Campbell told viewers.

In order to ease her nerves, Campbell could be seen getting ear seeds applied to her acupuncture points, which helps to “balance the heart and mind.” Then, Campbell put on a hazmat suit that she bought from Amazon for $15.99. She paired that with pink latex gloves so that she could limit her contact with surfaces as much as possible.

“In all honesty, this is not a funny time. It’s not a humorous time,” Campbell stated. “I’m not doing this for laughs. This is how I feel comfortable traveling.”

Campbell also shared that some people on the plane moved away from her, but it did not bother her. The 49-year-old said: “Everybody didn’t want to be around me but that’s cool — I didn’t want to be around them either.”

People reported that, although this is the first time that Campbell wore a hazmat suit while flying, she has actually been wearing gloves and masks on flights for a long time now to protect herself against germs on surfaces around the airport and airplane.

Naomi Campbell has previously shared a video about her ‘airport routine’

This is also not the first time that fans got to see Campbell going to extreme measures to protect her health. Last year, the model posted a video that shared with fans her “airport routine.”

In the video, she revealed that she wipes down every surface around her on the plane, including her seat belt, tray table, TV screen, remote control, and window. She also has a cover that she puts over the seat before sitting on it.

The routine takes quite a while to do, but Campbell believes that this has helped her stay healthy over the years. She said: “As much as I travel, I should get sick so much more with colds and stuff. I’m blessed that I don’t. I really think that this helps me, my little routine.”

How other celebrities have been dealing with the coronavirus outbreak

Campbell is not the only celebrity who is making sure that they stay safe during the coronavirus outbreak.

For example, Howie Mandel has also been spotted in a hazmat suit of his own. Meanwhile, stars like Gwyneth Paltrow, Selena Gomez, and Brody Jenner have started wearing face masks.

Other celebrities like Katie Couric and Celine Dion are taking precautions and staying home to help contain the spread of the coronavirus. Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, have both tested positive for it, so they are being put in isolation.

Revealed, the real reason for ball-boys… to make Chelsea’s 23-stone, 6ft 4ins goalkeeper look even bigger between the sticks

NOWADAYS ball-boys in football are commonplace… integral even.

Youngsters, often youth team players, are tasked with fetching the ball after it's left the field of play to keep the game moving smoothly.

But, incredibly, ball-boys were NOT even invented to retrieve footballs.

To learn the real origin of the humble ball-boy, you need to take a trip down memory lane – all the way to 1905, in fact.

In the late-19th and early-20th century, there stood a man known as "The Colossus" – 6ft 4ins, 23-stone William Foulke.

Despite his incredible size, Foulke – affectionately known as "Fatty Foulkes" – was a goalkeeper… and a very good one at that.

After joining Chelsea from Sheffield United for an incredible fee of just £50 – having spent 21 years at the Blades – the Blues had an idea.

How could they make their gigantic goalie look even more massive? Perspective, of course.

In order to make the man-mountain look even more imposing, they hired two young boys to stand behind the goal, in a bid to make him appear yet more humongous.

And boy did it work… having joined newly-formed Chelsea, one-cap England international Foulke was handed the maximum wage and was instantly installed as club captain.

In his one and only season in London, the giant stopper saved TEN penalties as the Blues finished third in the Second Division.

Despite his incredible size – weighing just one pound less than his two full-backs combined – Foulke was agile, athletic and deemed to be one of the first 'keepers to punch incoming crosses clear.

In 1905-06, Foulke conceded just 28 goals in 35 games… which is all the more impressive when you consider Chelsea shipped 17 in the SIX matches he missed.

The real reason Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers never dated

It was a match made in country music heaven, but duet partners Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers somehow never became a couple in real life. Their lifelong friendship contributed massively to the chart success of many classic hits, but their indelible chemistry both on record and when sharing the stage together never managed to spill over.

Now, over 30 years after they first teamed up, we finally know the answer to why the Parton-Rogers dream team remained just in the recording studio, on the airwaves, and in our hearts.

The country music titans were about to take the stage together for the final time when Today cornered them for a chat about what went wrong romantically for them. “First of all, she’s hard to look at for me,” Rogers joked cheekily, with Parton responding, “I’m not his type.” Ever since 1983’s massive “Islands in the Stream,” fans have been rooting for the two to make it official, but Rogers explained they made better music by keeping things friendly. “I’m a believer that tension is better if you keep it than if you satisfy it,” Rogers explained.

Rogers joked that Parton had turned him down, but Dolly quickly shut that down, saying, “Nah. You know what, we were almost like brother and sister. And it would almost be like incest. So we just never went there. The “Jolene” hit-maker confirmed the two are very good friends and super similar, maybe even a bit too similar at times, which is why they never crossed that line.

Country music will honor Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers once again

Both Parton and Rogers will be celebrated in upcoming TV specials, due for release on A&E this spring. According to Sounds Like Nashville, the legendary stars will be honored alongside fellow icon Willie Nelson. First up, on April 12, Biography: Dolly looks to tell the singer’s life story from growing up in poverty in Tennessee to her recent 50th anniversary celebration at the legendary Grand Ole Opry. Parton herself will be interviewed for the special, which will surely detail how she changed country music.

Rogers will get similar treatment when Biography: Kenny Rogers airs the following night. The doc will tell his similarly fascinating life story, also integrating footage from the singer’s 2017 farewell concert, All In For The Gambler. Naturally, his lifelong friend Parton will feature as one of the interviewees discussing the musician’s undeniable impact on country music.

Real Madrid ready to enter £65m transfer hunt for teen sensation Erling Haaland in major blow to Man Utd – The Sun

SPANISH giants Real Madrid are ready to splash the cash for teen sensation Erling Haaland.

It comes as a blow for Manchester United, who missed out on the young Norwegian in January.

Karim Benzema has not scored in La Liga since netting the winner against Atletico Madrid in February – one of just two strikes in as many months.

And Zinedine Zidane is in the market for a goalscorer with summer signing Luka Jovic struggling to make an impact.

Haaland, 19, has caught the attention of many top European clubs and Real are in need of a talisman following the departure of their star man Cristiano Ronaldo, who is now shining in Serie A with Juventus.

According to reports in Spain, Real have already held talks with Borussia Dortmund for the £65million-rated teen, who has enjoyed a record-breaking start to life in the Bundesliga.

He joined the German outfit from Salzburg in January – turning down a Manchester United offer in the process.

Haaland netted a hat-trick in just 23 minutes on his debut for Dortmund, against Augsburg, in January.

He then went on to score twice in his second game, making it five goals in 57 minutes for his new team.

The youngster scored 28 goals in just 22 games for RB Salzburg in the first half of the campaign.

He has also managed 12 goals in just eight appearances since his signing with the German giants.

Other names making the rounds in terms of a Real swoop are Lautaro Martinez and Timo Werner.

Both are on the striker shortlist for the Spanish side as Zidane aims to bolster his attack.

Los Blancos need a Ronaldo replacement, and fast, as currently the squad are heavily reliant on Benzema who has struggled to find the net.

The one positive in this scenario for Zidane is that Real and Dortmund happen to share a good relationship, having successfully done business in the past.

Both managers are said to get along well with Haaland's agent Mino Raiola an added bonus.

The pair are in one of the tightest battles at the top of La Liga in years, with two points separating leaders Barca from Los Blancos – who head into this clash on the back of a 2-1 defeat to Manchester City.

Yet, victory in Madrid could see either side put one hand on the league title.

What time does Real Madrid vs Barcelona kick off?

The El Clasico will take place on Sunday, March 1.

It will kick off at 8pm UK time – that is 9pm in Spain and 3pm ET.

The clash will be held at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

The first league fixture of the season ended in a 0-0 draw at Camp Nou – meaning victory for either side would hand them the advantage should they end up level on points in the league.

What TV channel is it on and can I live stream it?

Real Madrid vs Barcelona will be shown live on LaLigaTV, with coverage underway from 7.30pm.

Sky and Virgin customers can sign up for both Premier Sport channels and LaLigaTV for £9.99 a month.

Meanwhile, Sky subscribers can get LaLigaTV on its own for £5.99 a month.

You can also live stream via Premier Player for the same prices.

In the US, the match will be shown live on beIN SPORTS and Fanatiz USA.

What is the team news?

Real Madrid will have Sergio Ramos available, despite getting sent off in the Champions League against Man City.

But Eden Hazard will miss the match with a broken ankle, while Marco Asensio remains out injured.

Rodrygo is suspended for the clash after picking up two yellows in a game for the reverse side, Castilla.

And Mariano Diaz is expected to be sidelined despite returning to training.

As for Barcelona, they have a lengthy injury list, including Ousmane Dembele and Luis Suarez being out until the end of the season.

Sergi Roberto, Arda Turan and Jordi Alba will also miss the game, while Gerard Pique could feature after recovering from an ankle problem.

Stat attack!

  • In La Liga, Barcelona have score 288 El Clasico goals, while Real Madrid have 286
  • Real Madrid have not won a La Liga El Clasico since 2016 – with Barcelona able to match the unbeaten record set by Los Blancos in 2003 if they avoid defeat
  • Real's Sergio Ramos holds the record for most El Clasico appearances with 43, just one ahead of Lionel Messi

What are the odds?

Despite leading La Liga, Barcelona are the underdogs to win this clash at a price of 21/10, compared to Real Madrid's odds of 23/20 to claim victory.

Gareth Bale has only managed two goals in the league this season, but is 5/2 to bag one against the Catalan giants.

Yet, Lionel Messi – El Clasico's record goalscorer – is just 11/2 to score two or more.
