While it’s extremely unlikely to help people fight off the new virus, vitamin C has many benefits for helping prevent a cold. In fact, two-time Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling touted vitamin C as not only helping to prevent the common cold, but also to help thwart more severe illnesses like cancer and heart disease. On the flip side, a diet lacking in essential nutrients can cause a variety of unpleasant symptoms.
These symptoms are a way for the body to communicate potential deficiencies and is important to be vigilant of these signs in order to adjust one’s diet accordingly.
Noticing a certain sign in your mouth may signal a lack of vitamin C.
Vitamin C is also known as ascorbic acid and is necessary for the growth, development and repair of all body tissues.

Vitamin C plays an important role in wound healing and immunity, and it even acts as an antioxidant which helps prevent against cell damage.
Vitamin C deficiencies are rare for those who consume adequate amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables in their diet.
However, those who lack in the recommended amount of fruit and vegetables may notice their gums are more susceptible to bleeding which is a symptom of vitamin C deficiency.

What the studies say
In a study with The National Academies of Sciences Engineering Medicine, the role of vitamin C was investigated.
The study listed the various roles vitamin C has in maintaining good health which include helping with cognitive function and memory, helping reduce the risk of catching the common cold and helping to decrease the risk of atman and other related pulmonary conditions.
The study also noted: “Nearly all studies show that smokers have decreased plasma and leukocyte ascorbate levels compared to nonsmokers.
“Part of this difference may be attributable to a lower intake of fruits and vegetables among smokers than among nonsmokers.”
Vitamin C keeps the blood vessels healthy and it helps the blood to clot properly.
