As long as you don’t mind looking like you’re off to a Marvel-themed fancy dress party, this could be the future of swimming. Speedo has revealed a futuristic new swimsuit, which is packed with tech designed to help you glide through the water like a hot knife through butter. Dubbed Fastskin 4.0, this clever clothing includes a built-in AI Live Coach who will let you know how well you are performing and offer advice on the technique of your breaststroke or front crawl.

To help cut down on weight, and the need for batteries, the smart coach is driven by Energy Harvesting Fabric which converts the user’s motion into power. Speedo says that its Fastskin 4.0 suit will be customised to perfectly fit the person wearing it and don’t panic about embarrassing yourself as you try get your body inside the fabric.

An Adaptive Smart Lock Seal helps you easily slip the suit on and off.

Once in the water, the suit features Shark Skin 4.0 Boosters with the design and texture responding to how the swimmer moves in the water before adapting its structure to direct water off the suits and maximise propulsion from every stroke and kick.

These in-water features are supported by a Core Reactor which will help swimmers to really cut through the water. The Core Reactor responds live to the body’s position in the water and adjusts buoyancy for ultimate hydrodynamics and streamlining.

The Fastskin has been created in partnership with Aqualab with Speedo hoping that it could help athletes break every record going including finally being able to smash through the 20-second barrier for 50m freestyle.

One final feature of the Fastskin 4.0 is that it’s been crafted with bio-engineered, genetically modified bacteria that means 80% of the suit will biodegrade once finished with.

Dame Judi Dench says she 'enjoys swimming naked'

Speaking about the suit, Team Speedo star Duncan Scott, said: “The Fastskin 4.0 is an incredibly cool concept and it’s really exciting to see the advances in technology and how they can be applied to the pool.

“Ever since I was a young swimmer, Speedo has been leading the way in terms of technology and it is great to know that they are always working away in the background to make sure that we have the very best suit possible. I’m quite jealous of the next generation of swimmers who will have the support of all this work.

“The AI Live Coach would be a complete game changer; I just hope it’s a computer voice and not my own coach!”

This just a concept right now but Speedo says it’s a vision of how swimwear will look in the year 2040.
