Save money at the races with top tips for bargains on travel, food and tipple — plus win £50,000 in our raffle – The Sun

THE amount people spend at the races makes me giddy.

With the Cheltenham Festival getting underway tomorrow, some racegoers will spend hundreds on transport, food and a tipple or two — and that’s before having a punt on the racing itself.

Follow my tips to rein that in a bit.

TRAVEL: Driving? Fill up your tank at the cheapest petrol station near home. This week I saw a difference of almost 50p a litre at two local petrol stations. Asda is cheapest of the supermarkets, having dropped its price by 3p a litre this month. If you are going by rail, try the TrainPal app. Money-saving blogger Jordan Cox recommended it on our Sun Savers Facebook show this week. It has no booking fees, unlike Trainline, and with split-ticketing you can bring down the cost. Also, people forget that by booking together, they can get a group discount with some networks.

EATING AND DRINKING: This will be pricey whatever you do — but check the and check where your ticket entitles you to eat, so you can compare the cost. Plot a route via Prezzo, where you can get 30 per cent off right now. Or download the McDonald’s app — you can often get a freebie just by registering. You can’t take booze into the racecourse but you can enjoy a pre-race tipple on your way with a £1 can of gin and low-cal tonic from Tesco.

DRESS TO IMPRESS: Check out for affordable glad-rags. I love the Want That Trend green ruffle midi dress, £18. Fellas will look dapper in a slim-fit blazer, £50 in the clearance section (was £139). Girls, top off your look with a fascinator at ASOS, from just £4. Similar options cost £40 at Debenhams.
