Supermarket meal deals are a quick and easy option for getting food while on the go. Sainsbury’s has offered meal deals for many years now but these could be set to change.
With lockdown restrictions beginning to ease, Britons are starting to spend more time out of their homes.
This often means eating on the go and restaurants and pubs in England are currently open for food for outdoor bookings.
For those who don’t have time to dine in, supermarket meal deals are an affordable lunchtime alternative.
Sainsbury’s is set to revamp their on-the-go meal deal service, according to an internal briefing seen by The Grocer.
This will see the meal deal options expand beyond a simple sandwich and bag of crisps.
In fact, there will be more choices than ever when picking a main, side and drink.
Hot foods such as chicken, pizza and filled rolls will be available as a main.
Sausage rolls, potato wedges and hash browns can be picked up as hot sides options.
More items from Sainsbury’s chilled snacking range will be available in the meal deal, including its Plant Pioneers vegan range.
Hungry shoppers will also be able to upgrade their drinks with even more beverages to choose from.
For the first time, Sainsbury’s hot drinks and regular Costa drinks will count towards the deal.
However, the Taste the Difference range will not be included in meal deals.
The changes are set to compete with premium lunchtime options from retailers such as Marks & Spencer, and with popular café chains.
Meal deal and non-meal deal products will be separated in stores to make picking lunch easier.
The new offerings, set to launch this month, will cost £3.50.
Confirming the changes, a Sainsbury’s statement said: “With over 500 products across main, snack and drink now included… we are sure we have something to suit everyone.”
Supermarkets have been making updates to help customers get everything they need in one place.
This week, Tesco announced a partnership with Pret A Manger which will see the café opening up in some of the supermarket branches.
Pano Christou, chief executive of Pret A Manger, said: “As the UK emerges from lockdown, this partnership with Tesco is one way in which we’re transforming our business model to adjust to a new way of living and working.
“We look forward to working with the Tesco team on this partnership.”
