Prince Harry cracked a cheeky joke as Meghan Markle got ready for a glitzy New York gala in the couple’s new bombshell Netflix documentary.

In the third episode of her Netflix documentary, the Duchess of Sussex, 41, is seen being sewn into the red sleeveless gown which she wore to attend the Veterans Day gala in November 2021.

The clip – which appears to have been filmed in a New York hotel room – shows a team of four stylists helping Meghan get ready for the event.

As the team complete the finishing touches on Meghan into the dress, Prince Harry watches from a sofa across the room.

Urging producers to capture the moment the stylists disappear under the bottom of the dress, Harry turned to the camera and said: ‘Please tell me you’re getting that?’

Addressing his wife, he added: ‘There are now three people under your dress!’

As well as tightening the fit across the bust and waist, the clip shows how the stunning dress was designed around the Duchess’s shape.

The dress maker said: ‘Have you ever had four people help you into a dress before? ‘ Meghan replied: ‘No never.’

At another point Meghan asked the designer- who was under her flamboyant gown- if he ‘has enough light’ before bursting out laughing.

The Duchess joked: ‘Lets just call that a rhetorical question.’

Meghan donned the show-stopping red gown, featuring a deep neckline, pleated skirt and thigh-high split.

She completed her glamorous ensemble with a pair of matching £696 slingback heels by Giuseppe Zanotti featuring crystal-embellished buckle detail.

Meghan Markle claims she had ‘tone down’ her wardrobe after marrying into the Royal Family

She accessoried it with Maison Birks’ £9,934 Snowstorm earrings, a £5,000 gold Cartier Love bracelet, as well as a poppy as she attended the event on an aircraft carrier which houses the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum.

In the following scene, Meghan then went on to claim that she ‘toned down’ her wardrobe while living in the UK out of fear of wearing the same shade as a more senior royal or The Queen.

She said: ‘Most of the time I was in the UK, I rarely wore colour.

‘To my understanding, you can’t ever wear the same colour as Her Majesty if there’s a group event but then you also shouldn’t be wearing the same colour as one of the other more senior members of the family.’

To respect this rumoured royal protocol, Meghan says she started dressing almost exclusively in shades of camel, beige and white.

She continued: ‘I wore a lot of muted tones but it was also so I could just blend in. I’m not trying to stand out here.

‘There was no version of me [that was] joining this family and trying not to do everything I could to fit in. I don’t want to embarrass the family.’

However, Meghan did still continue to wear colour on solo engagements – including her visit to a community centre in Birkenhead, where she wore a bright red coat over a purple dress.

Although it is unclear whether royal women are asked to abide by this hierarchical dress code, the Queen famously wore bright colours for public engagements.

Elsewhere in the episode, Prince Harry blasted the ‘invented protocols’ that were appearing in the press around the time Meghan was being introduced into the Firm – alleging that the former Suits star had stepped out of line with her choice of hairstyle or by signing an autograph.

What’s more, Meghan compared the first encounter with Her Majesty in 2016 to a lowbrow themed dinner at America’s ‘Medieval Times’.

Meghan: ‘I had to Google God Save The Queen!’

Recounting the ‘intense’ moment, she performed a deep curtsey as husband Harry watched on, stone-faced, before he glanced off camera appearing awkward. The pair then chuckled afterwards.

Meghan met the Queen for the first time during a lunch at the Royal Lodge in Windsor, shortly after her and the Duke revealed they were dating, in 2016.

But she said the whole occasion felt like an antiquated banquet at Medieval Times, a family dinner theater in the US featuring staged medieval-style games, sword-fighting, and jousting.

The Queen was the first senior member of the Royal Family that Meghan met after she and Prince Harry announced their relationship in 2016.

‘She had no idea what it all consisted of,’ Harry tells the docu-series, as he sits with his arm around his wife. ‘So it was a bit of a shock to the system for her.’

Grinning, Meghan added: ‘I mean. it’s surreal. There wasn’t like some big moment of “Now you’re gonna meet my grandmother”.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have already made a number of claims in two trailers released by Netflix

‘I didn’t know I was going to meet her until moments before. We were in the car and we were going to the Royal Lodge for lunch, and he [Harry] was like, “Oh, my grandmother is here, she’s gonna be there after church.”.

‘I remember we were in the car, driving and he’s [Harry] like, “You know how to curtsy, right?”. And I just thought it was a joke.’

The Duke continued: ‘How do you explain that to people? How do you explain that you bow to your grandmother? And that you would need to curtsy, especially to an American. That’s weird.’

Meghan then tells the documentary: ‘Now I’m starting to realise this is a big deal. I mean, American’s will understand this. We have Medieval Times dinner and tournament. It was like that. Like, I curtsied as though I was like… “Pleasure to meet you your Majesty.”

‘It was so intense. And then when she left, Eugenie and Jack and Fergie say “you did great!”. Thanks. I didn’t know what I was doing.’

Meghan and Harry’s Netflix documentary is out today and begins with an attack on Buckingham Palace’s decision not to co-operate with the series that declares a fresh war on the Royal Family and the media.

The highly-anticipated series is being put out in two parts, with the first three episodes of the six-part docu-series now available to stream.

The series contains tears from Meghan, who Harry repeatedly compares to Princess Diana claiming that both his mother and wife were being hunted by the press.
