Poundland is a favourite among shoppers hoping to grab a bargain on essential items. This weekend, it will open two new types of stores.
The new Poundland Local branches are the first of their kind.
Two shops will open this weekend in Kendray and Hornsea, Yorkshire.
The Poundland Locals are a pilot of its new convenience stores.
It follows in the footsteps of other branches such as Tesco Express and Sainsbury’s Local.
However, unlike in some convenience stores, prices will be the same as the full sized Poundland.
The new branches will be open from 7am to 9pm and be smaller than a standard Poundland.
While it will not be able to stock as much, the branches will sell a carefully selected range of essential items.
These will include household products, health and beauty, stationery and homeware.
In particular, the stores will have a focus on food making it the perfect stop for a top-up shop.
Groceries available will include fresh fruit and vegetables, frozen foods, breads, alcoholic beverages, fresh coffee and baked goods from Poundbakery.
The local stores aim to bring the convenience of Poundland stores into more locations.
If successful, Poundland Local will roll out to more parts of the UK.
Customers visiting the new branches will be asked to wear masks and maintain social distancing, in line with Government guidance.
Safety measures will be in place such as screens at checkouts and the store will be regularly cleaned.
Poundland transformation and retail director Austin Cooke said: “The launch of Poundland Local is a really exciting development and we hope customers are as excited as we are.
“While our Local format will have the ranges customers would expect in a neighbourhood store, they won’t have to pay more for that doorstep convenience.”
Poundland recently trialed a home delivery scheme where staff and guests could get items delivered to their homes.
There were more than 2,000 lines available for them to choose from, including groceries and clothing.
If the trial is successful, the retailer hopes to open it up to the public.
Pepco CFO Nick Whartons said: “In the balance of 2021 we will be trialling both in Pepco and Poundland a series of online models and these will test a variety of approaches online.
“We’ll test home delivery as well as click and collect in-store. And we’ll also have our own e-commerce platform, our own transactional website, but also test the benefits of being on a shared marketplace, essentially to share the costs of that operating base.”
