Many will be forced to resort to online shopping for any early Christmas gifts as a second lockdown means certain shops will have to close. The lockdown kicks in at 12.01am on Thursday, November 5, and is expected to last until December 2, although there is some speculation the measures will be in place for longer. Chancellor Rishi Sunak said “all bets are off” when asked if the shutdown will actually end on one month, while Dr Hilary Jones warned it’s “inevitable” that it will be extended.

Which retailers will be staying open through lockdown?

Although the Government hasn’t yet released its full list of retailers which can stay open, some are definitely allowed to keep trading.

This includes:

  • Supermarkets
  • Garden centres
  • Food shops
  • Opticians – Specsavers and Boots will be open throughout lockdown
  • Pet supplies – Pets at Home says it expects to be able to keep stores operating

Is Argos open during lockdown?

Argos will most likely be forced to close its doors during the lockdown.

The retailer has closed its physical sites for the duration of the firebreak lockdown in Wales, which began on October 23, so it makes sense they would close again in England.

Express.co.uk reached out to Argos for confirmation but failed to get a response.

However, even if physical stores are closed, you will still be able to order Argos items online, where they can be delivered to your home or made available for click and collect.

Argos stores situated inside Sainsbury’s supermarkets will likely be allowed to continue trading.

In Wales, stores are closed in Wales until November 9.

However, if you have paid for something online you can collect it using the collection service “as part of your essential food shop”.

Regarding store openings in Wales, Argos said in a statement: “Following guidelines, our stores in Wales will close from Friday, October 23, at 6pm until Monday, November 9.

“Argos stores within the supermarkets are also closed, but pre-paid online orders can be collected as part of your essential food shop, or you can order online for home delivery.”

It goes on to explain Argos stores in England will remain open, but this was before the lockdown was announced so undoubtedly this is no longer the case.

Argos adds: “To keep your visit as short as possible, we recommend you purchase your items online, for collection or home delivery.

“We’re limiting the number of customers in all our stores, and you may need to queue before entering.

“You will also need to wear a face covering and follow the social distancing rules.”

It is worth calling beforehand to see the store’s operating hours before heading out to avoid disappointment.
