Emily in Paris Sampled by 58 Million Netflix Households Worldwide

The first season of Netflix’s escapist hit “Emily in Paris” was sampled by some 58 million households worldwide in the month after its debut, making it what the streamer described as its “most popular” comedy series of 2020.

Netflix disclosed the viewership stat Monday along with the news that production on Season 2 of the Darren Star comedy starring Lily Collins begins today in its namesake city. The series will also shoot in St. Tropez and other spots in France.

“Emily in Paris” debuted Oct. 2 and was renewed just five weeks later. The series revolves around Emily Cooper, a young woman from Chicago who navigates her way through the City of Light after falling into her dream job as a social media maven for a luxury goods company.

The 10-episode half-hour series was embraced as a quick binge last fall by Netflix subscribers stuck at home because of the pandemic. The occasional outbursts from French critics about the show’s fantasized portrayal of Paris didn’t hurt the show’s reputation either. Netflix said 58 million households “chose to watch ‘Emily in Paris’ in its first 28 days.” As of the first quarter of this year, Netflix has more than 207.6 million subscribers worldwide.

“From the beginning, we always wanted to create this beautiful cinematic view of Paris. The timing of the series release was fortuitous for us as everyone around the world was able to become armchair travelers and live vicariously through our cast,” Star said.

“Emily in Paris” is produced by MTV Studios, Darren Star Productions and Jax Media. Tony Hernandez and Lilly Burns of Jax Media executive produce alongside Star and Andrew Fleming. Collins also produces.

“As an actor, an artist and a creative, the most meaningful gift is to connect with people through your art in some way. It’s an honor to be associated with a project that provided people with some much-needed relief during a trying time when everyone was looking for a reason to smile and laugh,” Collins said.

Netflix confirmed the Season 2 filming plan in a social media post written as a letter to Emily from her boss at the Savoir Agency, Sylvie Grateau, played by French actress Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu (“Call My Agent”).
