While waiting for his opponent’s response, Anthony Joshua “respects” The Gypsy King’s bravery for speaking up about his mental health challenges. “It’s tough for someone to go through that mental pressure and pull themselves back up,” Anthony Joshua said. “He’s put it out to the world, ‘This is what I’ve gone through, if I’m a boxer, heavyweight champion of the world, hard man, if I can go through it…’.”It gives people hope. I respect it, 100 per cent you have to respect it.”
It wasn’t too long ago when Anthony Joshua had health problems of his own that he needed help with.
A couple of years ago, in the summer of 2019 in New York city, Anthony Joshua experienced his first professional loss against Ruiz Jr.
Following Anthony Joshua’s defeat, conspiracy theories circulated as to why he was off his game that evening.
All of them were denied at the time by his management, including one about him having a panic attack.
However, six months down the line, Anthony Joshua confessed to some “health issues”.
“I had some issue with my health which I was going through for a long time,” Joshua told Mike Costello of the BBC.
“I didn’t know what was wrong with me. I felt so tired and drained and thought it must be down to training.
“In the changing room before the fight I got a bucket of ice and was putting my head in it thinking, ‘Why do I feel so tired?’”

Following health check-ups, Anthony disclosed “it showed what the problem was”.
The 31-year-old said he “had an operation done” to help resolve his health issues, and he’s been fighting fit ever since.
What’s a panic attack?
The NHS explained: “A panic attack is a feeling of sudden and intense anxiety.”
Physical symptoms of a panic attack include:
- Feeling disoriented
- Rapid, irregular heartbeats
- Dry mouth
“The symptoms of a panic attack are not dangerous, but can be very frightening,” said the NHS.
One episode of a panic attack can last anywhere between five minutes to half hour.
Some people may feel as though they’re having a heart attack, or that they are going to collapse or die.
Professor Paul Salkovskis – a professor of clinical psychology and applied science at the University of Bath – shared his expertise.
“Panic attacks always pass and the symptoms are not a sign of anything harmful happening,” he said.
“Tell yourself that the symptoms you’re experiencing are caused by anxiety.”
He advised to “confront your fear” and your anxiety will begin to pass; breathing techniques help too, which include:
- Breathe in as slowly, deeply and gently as you can, through your nose
- Breathe out slowly, deeply and gently through your mouth
- Count steadily from one to five on each in-breath and each out-breath
- Close your eyes and focus on your breathing
