Wayne Rooney believes United need “two or three years” to be able to compete with rivals Liverpool and City.

United have not won the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013.

Ahead of the FA Cup clash between his new side Derby and United, he told the Telegraph: “It is going to take another two or three years, I believe.

“The important thing is for them to try and get into the Champions League this year.

“It is really tight at the minute. I think that will help them a lot if they can do that, but it is going to take time.

“The United fans need to be a bit patient with what’s going on and let these players try and prove themselves.”

Legendary Old Trafford keeper Alex Stepney has praised Harry Maguire for getting to know the staff around the ground.

Stepney said: “Great to hear this, it's an attitude which was very much part of the club in days gone by, well done Harry.”

The future of the goalkeeper's position at United has been a talking point among Red Devils' fans for the past few months.

David De Gea has most certainly had a dip in form and Dean Henderson looks promising on loan at Sheffield United.

Now Lee Grant has signed an extension at United, taking him to the end of the 2020-21 season.

The 37-year-old said: “I love being here and clearly somebody likes me being here also, so it's good to have it sorted

“I'm just looking forward to being part of next year and part of watching the football club grow and move forward, which for me, has been happening clearly over the last 18 months anyway.

“But seeing those seeds that have been planted and getting the chance to hopefully see the fruits of that next year will be nice.”

United are reportedly using three words to try and land a lucrative £160million double deal for Jadon Sancho AND Jack Grealish this summer.

Bleacher Report claim that the Red Devils are hoping they can fend off competition for the highly-rated England duo with just three words.

    History. Heritage. Pedigree.

A source told the outlet: “Everyone wants to play for us.”

Kevin De Bruyne is a doubt for Sunday’s Manchester derby after picking up a back injury in the Carabao Cup final win over Aston Villa last weekend.

The Belgian, 28, was not fit for last night’s FA Cup win at Sheffield Wednesday and boss Pep Guardiola admits he does not know how long he will be out.

Man City face United for the eagerly-anticipated derby at the Etihad on Sunday.

Pep said: “Kevin was not fit. He fell down in a bad position in his back. I don’t know for Sunday.

“It’s better to go there winning games, being in the FA Cup than being out.”
