Olivia Rodrigo Talks Writing The Rose Song For High School Musical: The Musical: The Series

Olivia Rodrigo performs a beautiful new song on this week’s episode of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series titled “The Rose Song“!

Not only does the 18-year-old actress sing the track, but she also actually wrote it.

Olivia opened up about writing the song and writing for her character Nini.

“I’m really proud of it. I think it’s really fun to write from the perspective of somebody that is not you,” she told People.

“It’s just really about Nini realizing that she is not how other people perceive her. That is not who she is,” Olivia added. “And she’s sort of coming into her own and finding her individuality. And I think that’s a really important process for any teenager to go through. It’s really cool to portray that on-screen.”

“I think all of us can feel restricted whether it’s by outside forces or by other people’s opinions. And I also think it’s super cool, because it also ties it to the rose thing, because the roses kept under a glass, and you’re breaking through the glass so it could be a glass ceiling thing, too,” she said.

In the episode, “Yes, And…,” Nini leaves YAC and goes back to East High, but the roles for Beauty and the Beast have already been cast, and she seems content on not being a part of the production, but Ricky is determined to get her some role.

Nini ultimately gets cast in a new role, “the Rose,” and is supposed to write a song for the Beast (Ricky) and the Rose to sing together. She ends up writing “The Rose Song” as a solo number about the importance of finding valuing in yourself and not just how others/boys value you.
