Zaya Wade made her red carpet debut over the weekend, alongside father Dwyane Wade and his wife, Gabrielle Union — one month after the retired NBA star confirmed his daughter is transgender.
For the Better Brothers’ Truth Awards in Los Angeles, the family color-coordinated in sleek suits. While Wade, 38, and Union, 47, opted for black-and-white tuxedo jackets and black slacks, 12-year-old Zaya stepped out in a green tuxedo jacket, which she accessorized with a pink sash and a matching clutch.
“Everyone allow her to re-introduce herself her name is Zaya Wade! [Saturday] night was Zaya’s first red carpet and we couldn’t have been prouder of how she handled the questions that were asked of her. She has emerged as one of the young faces and voices for the LGBTQ+ community. #truthawards,” Wade posted on Instagram Sunday.
The Truth Awards takes place annually “to increase the awareness of the Black LGBTQ community, and highlight their contributions in life, career, and mainstream culture,” according to the organization’s website.
In February, Wade spoke about Zaya’s journey on “Ellen,” after she came out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community last year.
On the same day that Wade opened up about Zaya, Union posted a clip of the father-daughter duo discussing the importance of “being true” to oneself.
“Meet Zaya,” Union captioned the Instagram video. “She’s compassionate, loving, whip smart and we are so proud of her. It’s Ok to listen to, love & respect your children exactly as they are. Love and light good people.”
Wade and Union, who have been married since 2014, share 1-year-old daughter Kaavia. Wade also has three children, including Zaya, from previous relationships.
