Cynthia Erivo is one to watch on any red carpet she graces. The double threat singer-actress who was nominated twice last year for her acting and vocal performance in Harriet always dares to take risks on fashion’s biggest nights—and virtual or not, tonight’s Golden Globes event was no different.
Erivo’s look was debuted on Instagram, by her stylist Jason Bolden. She then graced the IRL red carpet in Los Angeles in a Valentino Haute Couture look, straight off the recent runways in Paris. The look was shocking not only for its bright shade of lime green, but also in its sportswear details—like a shorter hemline, athletic neckline, sharp structure, scuba fabric, and body-skimming piping.

Erivo’s gown wows in both hue and volume, with an exaggerated full skirt, made even more striking by sky-high platform shoes, straight off of Pierpaolo Piccioli’s catwalk. Erivo wore the look in full, accented with the leather opera gloves and metallic platform shoes shown on the runway. She stayed true to her own style, as well as the bionic nature of the look, with her accessories—an ear full of earrings by Wempe, along with a diamond septum ring. She took her platinum hair to a pearlescent shade of silver to finish off the futuristic look.
According to E! News, the star’s trusted stylist Jason Bolden chose the cropped gown for after seeing it on the virtual runways—with little input from her. Per his comment to Zanne Roberts Rassi on E!, Erivo knew little of his choices prior to the event: “Cynthia knew nothing about this dress, but she trusts me and allows me to be creative,” Bolden told E! News. “The shoes are like skyscrapers; the color and the shape is so bold—and why not?!—to add some much-needed fantasy. The neon green tea-length dress reminds me of scuba fabric.”
Thanks to Erivo and Bolden, the red carpet is still all about drama, daring fashion choices, and Haute Couture—at home, on Zoom, and on the socially-distant, Los Angeles-based red carpet.
