Woman creates dupe of a £1.6k marble dining table for £20 using Fablon and car spray paint

A WOMAN has revealed how she transformed a £20 stained table from Facebook Marketplace into a designer inspired marble one using car spray paint and Fablon vinyl.

Jodie Driver, 32, wanted a pricey £1,600 table she spotted online but couldn’t afford it so started looking for cheaper alternatives and thinking about DIY options.

The domiciliary care worker noticed the cheap £20 table on Facebook and quickly purchased it with the intention of giving it a total makeover.

She transformed the stained table using marble-effect Fablon wrap and managed to turn the dining room furniture into a luxurious looking design on a budget.

She used household items – including her hairdryer, car spray paint and her debit card – to finish the DIY project.

Jodie shared the incredible transformation on Facebook, writing: “Couldn't afford the real marble table I wanted! So I bought a cheap table off Facebook and wrapped it!

“Happy with how it's turned out!

“Also chairs were brown leather with brown legs so I sprayed the legs and added chair covers.”

The post instantly raked up nearly 1,000 likes and hundreds of comments from strangers praising her DIY work and asking for advice.

Jodie admitted the Facebook table wasn’t in great condition when she saw it – but she knew she was going to give it a complete transformation after she purchased it.

She had seen so many people using Fablon to give furniture a makeover – so she was certain she could make the secondhand table look brand new.

She said: “I bought the table with the intention of doing it up. It wasn't in very good condition and it had stains all over the top if it.

“But as soon as I saw it I knew it was the right shape for me to be able to wrap it with the Fablon.

“Plus the table I wanted was between £1,200 and £1,600 with the chairs – so this was a much cheaper option.”

Jodie got to work on the table DIY project and spent an hour sanding down the wood to smooth out the surface.

She also tidied up any of the cracks and knocks on the table – before giving the whole thing a deep clean.

She purchased one large roll and two small rolls of marble-effect Fablon for under £20 from B&Q and got to work applying the sticky vinyl to the top surface of the table.

She said: “I then started to apply the Fablon. I only needed a towel, scissors, my bank card for tucking bits in and smoothing and a hair dryer!

“The hardest part was definitely getting the Fablon to stick straight on the top of the table.

“Plus I kept getting my hair extensions sucked in and caught up the end of the hair dryer!”

The thrifty mum cleverly used household items – such as her hairdryer and bank card – to ensure her new vinyl table top was secure and smooth.

Jodie then purchased four chair covers from Chair FX on Facebook for £50 and picked up some cheap car spray paint from the local Poundland.

I then started to apply the Fablon. I only needed a towel, scissors, my bank card for tucking bits in and smoothing and a hair dryer!

She added the luxurious crushed velvet covers to the old leather chairs and sprayed the legs of the table  – turning them bright white.

She said: “The Fablon cost me less than £20 and the car spray paint tins were only £1 each.

“The whole project did take about five hours in total I’d say as I had to get to work on it when I could – over a couple of days when I had the time.

“I think the hardest part of the whole thing was actually doing the legs of the table. Thinking about it, they had more angles to go round so maybe that’s why it was more tricky.

“But I was very impressed with the outcome – the table now wipes over really easily when the kids are eating dinner or drawing – I love it!”

Facebook users rushed to the comment section to praise Jodie for her incredible table transformation.

One wrote: “Looks amazing. I bought Fablon to wrap mine but haven’t plucked up the courage to do it yet!”

While another commented: “Not a fan of marble…but I love this. The chunky white legs are so much better than ones I’ve seen in shops. Fabulous – well done!”

A third added: “You’re amazingly good at decor! Love it xxx.”Meanwhile a fourth shared:  “What a brilliant idea! Looks great.”
